Ikole LGC seizes expired Vitamin C, other drugs
No fewer than 18 Cups of expired Bioracee Vitamin C and other drugs have been impounded by the Ikole Local Government Council of Ekiti State.
Mr Tunde Famuyisan, the Head of Environment and Sanitation Department of the council, told newsmen on Wednesday in Ikole-Ekiti that the drugs were seized from patent medicine store.
Famuyisan, who conducted newsmen round the seized items at the council’s secretariat, listed other impounded drugs as 14 packs and two pieces of Coflin by Dr Meyer, five packs and six pieces of Losargen 50, 11 packs and one piece of Diabeta.
According to him, seven packs and seven pieces of Nuiprofen and one Vitamin C syrup, 25 satchets of Colcol, one Cofmix, One Sevicid, three Bentcol and five satchets of Contafam were also confiscated from the store.
He explained that officials of the department impounded the expired drugs following a tip off by a resident, whose name was not disclosed for security reasons.
“On Tuesday, Feb., 6, a resident complained to us that he had sour throat and went to a drug store in the town to buy something to cure it.
"He said when he got home he tried to check the expiry date and discovered the Coflin tablet has expired.
“On receiving the complaint, my officials were mobilised to visit the medicine store where the drug was bought to conduct an investigation on the remaining packs of the particular drug.
“We discovered that the packs of the Coflin tablet in the drug store had expired since early January 2018,” Famuyisan said.
He said: “By our Right of Entry, according to the Public Health Law and Bye Laws, we conducted a search on the store and discovered several other drugs were expired.
“We have impounded the affected drugs. They will be destroyed and a Certificate of Destruction will be issued.
“We will never allow these expired drugs to go back to the society.’’
The environmental boss therefore warned Nigerians, especially rural dwellers, to be wary of patent medicine vendors by checking for expiry date of drugs in order to avoid unpleasant consequences.
