‘We are not harbouring anti-Ekiti agenda’- FUOYE

Our attention has been drawn to a story published in  The Nation  of 11-8- 2017. The report quoted a group called the Ekiti Student Union and some Youth Coalition (ESYC), as saying the management of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti harbours an anti-Ekiti agenda and that it is replacing Ekiti professionals with those from other states, specifically Ogun. Let me state that this is factually incorrect and smacks of an attempt to bring crisis to our institution. To put the records straight, while the Vice-Chancellor is from Ogun State; the Librarian, Dr. Gboyega Adio is from Oyo State. The Ag. Bursar and her husband are from Oyo/ Osun State and the Director of Administration, Mr. O. Odusanya is from Lagos State and not Ogun State as alleged. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor is from Ogun State, but is married to an Ekiti woman. Meanwhile, it should be noted that the Deputy Vice Chancellor was overwhelmingly voted for by a Senate whose membership is largely drawn from Ekiti. It ...

IKERE-EKITI; THE KINGDOM OF WARRIORS

Image
Ikere Ekiti or simply Ikere is an ancient Yoruba town in the present day Ekiti State, Southwest Nigeria. The town has a boundary in the north with Ado Ekiti, in the South with Akure [Ondo State]having Iju/Ita Ogbolu as the closest towns in the south. Ikere has a boundary with Ise Ekiti in her eastern flank while Igbaro Odo/Ilawe are the next neighbors to her west. Thus Ikere can be said to be the gateway to Ekiti State from the south. The paramount ruler goes by the title  OGOGA OF IKERE KINGDOM. According to oral history, Ikere was founded by a man named Aladeselu who is reported to have come from Uselu near Benin. As it was the practice in those days, itinerant immigrants moved from one place to another in search of suitable place to settle. In doing this they usually consulted the oracles to know the suitability of a place in terms of security, fertility of land for subsistence living and prosperity before picking a place for settlement. Aladeselu and his people con...

Elemi, Igede-Ekiti

Image
In virtually every Yoruba town, like many other places in Nigeria, there are different taboos which no one is allowed to violate freely. And anyone who violates such taboos does not go unpunished. Igede-Ekiti, headquarters of Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, is no exception to this rule, said its traditional ruler, Onigede of Igede- Ekiti, Oba James Aladelusi. Speaking with Daily Sun recently, the monarch listed the taboos of the town. Igede is one of the first towns founded in Ekiti land. The ancestor of the town, Ake and his wife, Erindo, migrated from Ile-Ife. The patriarch, according to Oba Aladelusi, had 16 children who grew up to become very powerful. After his death, the power struggle over who would ascend the throne led to a serious crisis, to the extent that they resorted to using diabolical means to fight one another. Legend has it that four of the children transformed into rivers, while some of the rest disappeared into the ground alive! Am...
